More and more homeowners and building specifiers are expecting to be able to buy windows with integrated ‘smart’ sensor technology to assist in areas such as climate control and security.

In this quick-read article, we’ll look at a few of the main items in the range and how they can enhance your windows and sliding units.
Seamless integration
You can combine Roto E-Tec Control components with a wide range of Roto hardware systems across all frame materials. This includes Roto NX and AL for Tilt&Turn or Tilt-Only and Turn-Only windows. Our sliding systems Roto Patio Inowa, Alversa and Lift are also compatible. For main doors, you can use special deadbolt switch contacts, designed for use with the Roto Safe series of door locks, for security monitoring.
Flexible and compatible
With building automation and security systems often being specified later on in the process than the windows and doors, it is important that you can fit sensors knowing they will work with any common smart home or BUS system. Roto products such as our MVS B contact and MTS thermostat sensor are potential-free, which means they are not affected by different voltage levels. You can install them and be confident they will work with whatever system they are connected to.
Precise monitoring
Security and effective alarm activation are key requirements when it comes to smart home systems. With Roto E-Tec Control | MVS you can detect not only if a window is open or closed, but also whether a closed window has been securely locked. If a window with a Roto MVS contact is opened when the alarm is set, the magnetic field is disrupted and the unit immediately sends a signal to set off the alarm and activate alerts.
The Roto system is certified to VdS Class B and C, and also Classes 2 and 3 of the relevant EN standard.
Energy saving when windows are open
A simple way to save energy is to ensure that neither heating nor air conditioning systems are working hard when a window is left open to provide natural ventilation.
Roto E-Tec Control | MTS magnetic thermostat sensor is a discreet device that can be installed on any inward-opening window design. It detects when the window is open and sends a signal to the heating or air conditioning units, which causes them to reduce output. The closure of the window causes the systems to return to their previous levels of heating or cooling.
Aesthetic and space saving
An issue with magnetic contact elements is that they sometimes take up space on the window frame and prevent locking points from being installed in that area. This is not an issue with Roto MVS B contacts, which can be concealed beneath a striker on a PVC or timber window frame.
Not only does this keep the sensor out of sight, it also enables security specifications such as RC2 and RC3 to be made without having to compromise on locking point positions. For manufacturers there is also the advantage that the window can be manufactured in line with your standard pattern: all you have to add is the sensor.
Indoor air safety
If extractor hoods are used at the same time as fireplaces or gas heating systems, it is possible for levels of carbon monoxide to increase dangerously while oxygen levels drop if there is not sufficient ventilation. Roto E-Tec Control | DAS is an automatic control unit that prevents an extractor hood from running unless a window is open.
