In recent times, Roto More has interviewed a few new colleagues who have joined Roto Western Europe in different roles. They all comment on how welcoming and supportive the team is, and how closely colleagues work together, even when based in different countries.

We spoke to Human Resources Manager Sylvie Hoste to find out how Roto Western Europe develops and maintains its team spirit.

Hi Sylvie, many people who visit Roto notice a strong sense of connection between employees, even across different countries and departments. What is the secret behind this team spirit?

It’s actually very simple: team spirit doesn’t happen by coincidence. It is built every day through our culture and values, our leadership, and the commitment of every employee. We actively create an environment where people support one another. They share knowledge and work together towards common goals.

How does having a shared purpose contribute to this?

At Roto, everyone contributes to the same overall objective: delivering the best technical solutions to our customers with excellent service. It doesn’t matter if you work in production, logistics, customer service, sales, IT, finance, HR, facility management, or any other function. Every role matters. When people see how their work contributes to the bigger picture, they better understand how their role fits into the wider team. That creates pride, motivation and a strong sense of belonging.

Roto often talks about putting people first. What does that mean in practice?

Strong teams are built on trust and respect. We believe people perform at their best when they feel valued and appreciated. That is why we encourage open communication, honest feedback, and mutual respect across all levels of the organisation. Employees are not just colleagues; they are part of a team and support each other. Whether it is helping a new team member, sharing expertise, or assisting during busy periods, collaboration is part of our daily culture.

Roto operates across many countries. Does this international environment strengthen team spirit?

Absolutely. Our teams work together every day while being based across Belgium, the Netherlands, UK and Denmark. Working across different countries means we can learn from different perspectives, experiences and ideas. It makes us stronger and helps us develop better solutions for our customers. What unites us is our shared commitment to Roto’s values and success.

How important is personal development in creating engagement?

It is very important. People are more engaged when they have opportunities to learn and grow. This is why we run initiatives such as Grow@Roto, training programmes, coaching, workshops, and development discussions. We encourage employees to keep developing their skills and knowledge. Learning together also helps people build strong relationships with their fellow team members. All of this helps to create a culture where everyone can succeed.

Roto often celebrates things such as employees’ achievements and work anniversaries. Is this part of building team spirit?

Yes, I believe recognition like this is very important. We celebrate achievements, successful projects, milestones, and personal accomplishments. Taking the time to focus on people’s contributions reminds us that success is always a team effort. Behind every achievement is a group of people who have invested their expertise, energy, and dedication.

Communication seems to be another important factor. Why?

One of Roto’s strengths is that our people are very accessible to each other. They know that they can ask for help at any time, and that everyone is willing to assist. When they need help, they know who to approach. This is because they know what knowledge and skills other team members have. Open communication helps us solve problems more quickly and avoid misunderstandings. It also strengthens relationships between teams. All of this builds transparency and trust, which are so important in a positive working environment.

How does team spirit show itself during challenging times?

When challenges arise, this is often when team spirit is most visible. Challenges can be related to pressures in the market, or operational changes that affect the company. Or it might be personal circumstances. Either way, colleagues consistently support one another. A strong team isn’t defined by whether it has difficulties, but by how people work together when they arise.

Who is responsible for maintaining Roto’s culture and team spirit?

Everyone. Culture is not created just by me or by anyone in management alone. It is shaped all the time by everyday interactions: a colleague offering help, a manager providing encouragement, a team sharing knowledge. Sometimes it is someone simply taking the time to listen. These small actions add up and create a workplace where people feel respected, supported and connected.

If you had to summarise Roto’s team spirit in one message, what would it be?

At Roto, team spirit is more than a slogan – it is part of the way we work together. Our products and services are important, but our people are our greatest strength. When people work together with trust, respect and a shared purpose, they can achieve great things. Together, we are Roto.
